Fr. Omar A. Huesca

Father Omar A. Huesca was born in the city of Habana, Cuba in 1949 and has lived in the United States as a naturalized citizen since 1961.  He attended public schools in Miami, Florida and graduated from Miami Senior High School in 1969.  After attending the then Miami Dade Community College, he received a scholarship to the University of Miami.

Father Omar is a priest of the Archdiocese of Miami and pastor of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, an inner-city parish. After his studies and training in the field of psychological counseling at the University of Miami, Father answered the Lord’s call to the Priesthood and was accepted to St. Vincent de Paul Theological Seminary.  He was ordained to the Priesthood of Christ on May 16, 1981 by Archbishop Edward McCarthy.  Fr. Omar has served as priest, counselor and spiritual director during his twenty-seven years of ministry.  Father is presently adjunct spiritual director at St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami.  As a member of the Institute for Priestly Formation (IPF), at Creighton University, in Omaha, Nebraska, he serves as team teacher of pastoral psychology, and spiritual director for the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola to seminarians from across the nation during the Summer session. Father Omar is also chaplain to COURAGE, the one approved ministry of the Church that helps men and women who experience feelings of same sex attraction and are seeking to live in chastity.

Fr. Omar is fervently committed to the rediscovery and restoration of biblical fatherhood in the Church and society.  To this purpose, Father Omar founded HEART OF THE FATHER, a fellowship of men of all ages who meet monthly to pray and to grow in virtue as men, husbands, fathers and sons.

St.  Robert Bellarmine Parish, where Fr. Omar has served as pastor for the last eighteen years, was established by Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll in 1868, in a meeting hall purchased from the Knights of Columbus.  This parish has served immigrant populations who have found a welcome to the United States in the embrace of their Catholic Faith.  At present, the parish serves an impoverished area where many are struggling to make ends meet and to send some help to their families in their countries of origin.  Financial survival of the parish is always precarious, yet the parishioners continue to sacrifice for their church.  This sacrificial love has made it possible to renew the worship area and to build classrooms and a small meeting hall.  Yet in today’s faltering economy, the survival of the parish requires more sacrifice and creativity.

Father Omar repeatedly exhorts his parishioners, relatives and benefactors to trust in God’s providence, to pray and work with joyful confidence.
