Belen and Pace football teams scoring for charity

An early September meeting between Brother Knight and Belen Alumni Jorge Varela and Belen Head Football Coach Richard Stuart, Belen Athletic Director Carlos Barquin, and Alejandro Maderal, Director of Belen’s Office for Social Justice, led to a pledge by Belen Jesuit Preparatory School to donate to Council #3274’s Thanksgiving Drive, a turkey for every point the Belen team scores in a home football game. That pledge was later increased by including points scored by the Belen JV team in its last three home football games this season.
Most recently, a meeting between Brother Knight and Pace Alumni Doug Austin and administrators at Monsignor Edward Pace High School including Principal Ana Garcia, Campus Ministers Andy Novela and Jeff Sanchez, Mission Club Moderator David Masters, Patrick Kunkel, Pace’s Director of Development, and Pace Board member Harold Robaina, resulted in Pace administrators agreeing to donate a turkey per point scored by their team in their upcoming game against Belen to Council #3274’s Thanksgiving Drive.
The resulting Knights of Columbus Turkey Bowl will be played at Belen’s de la Cruz Stadium on Friday the 19th of October at 4:00 PM. “Both schools have long challenged their students academically, physically, and spiritually in keeping with their Jesuit and Marist traditions. Each has produced leaders that have enriched our community and given generously to those in need. These pledges are just the latest example of how the best of Catholic values continue to be embraced and taught at both institutions. This act of charity by both schools can only add to the enthusiasm that the Belen and Pace families have for this important District 16-3A rivalry, and we Knights are proud to be associated with it,” commented Grand Knight Jose Matute.
The Knights of Columbus will provide an honor guard and flag bearers for the National Anthem. An engraved silver platter from Carroll's Jewelers in Coral Gables will become a traveling trophy awarded to the winner of the game. The platter will have the Knights of Columbus logo and the helmets of both schools engraved on it along with "This traveling trophy, symbolic of the many empty platters that both schools help to fill through their generous support of the Knights of Columbus Coral Gables Council #3274 Thanksgiving Food Drive is awarded to the winner of the varsity football game between Belen Jesuit Preparatory School and Monsignor Edward Pace High School."
