More than 2,000 came out for the Inaugural Miracle Walk on the 14th of October 2007 to support those with Down Syndrome and ther families. The Coral Gables Knights of Columbus Council was pleased to be a principal supporter of the event. In addition to assisting with logistics, set up, and post event activities, members of Council #3274 supported by Fourth Degree Honor Guard from the Father Andrew Brown and Marian Assemblies, sang the national anthem at the end of the opening ceremonies which included remarks from celebrity TV personality Beatrice Canals and a welcome by the Mayor of Coral Gables, the Honorable Don Slesnick.
The one-mile Miracle Walk, and the accompanying festival held at Palermo Park, was held to promote acceptance and awareness of people with Down Syndrome. The walk was the first of its kind in Miami-Dade County and was organized by the newly formed Down Syndrome Association of Miami. Grand Knight Jose Matute explained, "Our Council has been involved with Special Olympics for a number of years and we see supporting the Down Syndrome Association of Miami as an extension of our love for these great kids and our desire to help their families. It's an honor for us that the first Miami-Dade Miracle Walk took place in Coral Gables, and our pleasure to have supported this great event.
All the money raised through the $25 registration fee and from sponsor donations will be used by the Down Syndrome Association of Miami to provide greater support to all those in Miami-Dade whose lives have been touched by Down Syndrome. For more information please click here.
