For the third year, Council #3274 supported some of our most needy brothers and sisters at Thanksgiving by conducting a Canned Food and Turkey Drive to benefit the migrant worker families served by St. Ann’s Mission in Naranja.
The collection was conducted by members in their places of business and through other Coral Gables merchant locations using collection boxes marked with the logo of the Order and “Help the Needy this Thanksgiving – Knights of Columbus Canned Food Drive”. This year, 300 frozen turkeys were purchased and more than 3,000 cans and boxes of nonperishable food were collected and distributed. Many members participated in the collection phase which included collecting site solicitation, box placement and pick up, and can sorting. This year eight members took the day off from work to participate in the distribution effort, which included loading and unloading cans and frozen turkeys, and preparing family appropriate packages. Doug Austin, who chaired this activity for the second year, said, “The mission needed our help more than ever and the guys really responded. We were also lucky to have the help of Ocean Bank this year, which allowed us to set up collection boxes in some of their corporate departments. They were great to work with and their employees were very generous.”
