In 2003, Council #3274 introduced the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest at St. Theresa School. The contest essay theme is “The Responsibility of a Catholic Citizen in Today’s Society” challenges students, preparing for Confirmation, to reflect on their responsibilities as Catholics and exposes them to a Papal Encyclical.
The contest also exposes the eight graders and their parents and teachers to the Knights of Columbus. The winner in each of these three groups will be awarded a $100 US Savings Bond. The K of C Essay Contest was also used for a second time at St Francis Xavier Catholic School to determine the winner of the Council #3274 four-year scholarship to a Catholic High School. In addition to the eighteen Knights that reviewed and scored essays, numerous teachers were also recruited to assist with this effort. The Savings Bond award at St. Theresa School was made at morning assembly before the entire school. The four-year scholarship was awarded at the St. Francis Xavier graduation ceremony.
